bulls_tree.jpgBeef Bulls for the Future:

Five Star offers Angus, Red Angus, Limousin & Lim-Flex bulls. Initial genetic goals of Five Star Genetic Cooperators are to produce sound, functional beef bulls for upscale commercial cow/calf clients. We utilize only proven A.I. sires in each respective breed to sire 85% of our bulls. Five Star bulls are designed to sire feeder cattle that hit the market targets for our affiliated Five Rivers Ranch Cattle Feeding feedlots. That means a feeder steer or heifer that has the ability to stay healthy, perform & convert feed efficiently, then yield a carcass with added value for Quality & Yield. We also keep in mind the importance of the replacement heifer to be retained by the cow/calf rancher.

The Selection Process:

Five Star Bulls are selected from the top 50% of all male calf candidates from each of our cooperator herds. The first selection process happens at each respective cooperator ranch where we select only the top end male calves to go to our test facilities. Selection is based on birth weight, weaning weight, Expected Progeny Difference (EPDs) and visual appraisal. Our Fall Yearling bulls arrive in late April or May while the Spring Bull calves arrive in September through mid-October. The second selection/culling is scheduled when the bulls are 8 to 10 months of age. At this point we will evaluate the bulls for their 75-day post wean average daily gain and again a visual appraisal. The lower performing bulls and the bulls of undesirable frame or structure are culled. The third selection/culling process will take place at yearling data collection time. At this point will we evaluate all bulls for yearling performance, adjusted 365-day weight, post wean average daily gain, weight per day of age and ultrasound data for carcass composition: muscle (rib-eye-area), marbling (intramuscular fat, IMF) and fat cover (rib & rump fat). We also perform a semen test & breeding soundness exam. Bulls are again given a visual appraisal for composition and soundness.
